Sample letter:
I am pleased to offer my support, and I ask for your support, for the school renovation project proposed by St. Lawrence Vineyard Ministries, a project of St. Lawrence Church. This project truly fills a need in our neighborhood and city. Further, St. Lawrence is committed to an environmentally conscious renovation project. Some areas that show their commitment to conservation are: the commitment to solar panels for electricity, the decision to keep the historic structure, the existing recycling ministries, their commitment to new fluorescent lighting throughout the building, and the desire to use only environmentally friendly materials.
St. Lawrence is located in the third poorest city in the country and in an area of lower middle class, working families. The school building is part of the St. Lawrence Complex, and is located at 26 Wright Avenue. The primary goals of the block clubs, churches and neighbors when surveyed were: homework help, after school programs, job training, character building programs, child care, especially after school and in the summer and tutoring.
St. Lawrence School was built in the 1930s and has been closed since 1991. It was briefly used by the Buffalo Public Schools, but has been idle since 2001. It is being renovated as a community center. They envision that it will again hear the laughter of children, music and activity. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo (BGCB) are expected to be their primary tenant. The BGCB have a long history of service to the City of Buffalo. Their parent organization is nationally known and respected. They will offer programs like character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, sports, fitness, and social recreation as well as the arts. The new club is tentatively to be called the “Wright Place”.
To illustrate their commitment to conservation, preservation, innovation, and service, one only need look at the renovation of their former convent. After many years of service, the Stella Franciscan Sisters left St. Lawrence. The former convent was renovated to become the Franciscan Guest House. It now has a Hostel, therapist, food pantry, meeting rooms, health education, a chapel, and a children’s clinic. They soon expect to add a lawyer, another health care provider and a social worker.
The Boys and Girls Clubs have a proven track record, both locally and nationally, and St. Lawrence is very proud to be their partners in this endeavor. You can visit them on the web at www.stlawrencevineyardministries.org. Please join me in supporting this project.
Sincerely,
